Hydroleca

Water-holding clay pebbles

Description

Produced by firing tiny clay granules at 1200oC, Hydroleca is extremely lightweight with a smooth attractive outer skin and a honeycomb core.

As hard, ceramic pebbles, Hydroleca helps absorb water and then slowly releases it back into the growing media.

Hydroleca:

  • Ideal as an attractive mulch on any indoor or outdoor potted plant
  • The honeycomb core absorbs and releases water
  • Creates a micro-climate around pots and greenhouse benches.

Hydroleca’s cellular structure also has outstanding insulating properties which help safeguard plants from extreme variances in temperature.

Ideal for use as a decorative mulch, it can also be used for ‘crocking’ – which is the drainage layer in pots.

To protect skin, always wear protective gloves when handling Hydroleca and wash hands after use. Store away from garden chemicals such as weedkillers and pesticides to avoid contamination.

Hydroleca should also be resealed after each use and kept in a frost-free area.

Sizes available:

• 10 litres

How to use

Decorative mulch

Simply sprinkle a layer of Vitax Hydroleca on the surface of the compost in containers.

In addition to providing an attractive finish for the pot, the Hydroleca will retain and slowly release water and nutrients to the growing media, will help maintain the temperature of the compost, and will increase humidity around the plant.

Houseplants

Standing houseplant pots on a moistened layer of Hydroleca provides huge benefits.
It helps create a humid microclimate around the plant, protecting it from the dry air created by modern central heating systems. Simply place a layer of dampened Hydroleca in a dish and stand the pot on it. Water frequently.

Roof Gardens

The exceptionally light weight of Hydroleca makes it ideal for use in roof gardens or any location where the weight of a pot, tub, planter, raised bed etc., is critical. Hydroleca can be added to potting compost at a ratio of 3 parts compost/1 part Hydroleca, providing a substantial reduction in total weight. At the same time the addition of the Hydroleca improves the water holding capacity of the compost and decreases the frequency of watering.

Greenhouses

A thin layer of Hydroleca placed beneath plants on a greenhouse bench will gradually release moisture to the plants in a capillary action and will also increase the overall humidity in the greenhouse. Hydroleca pebbles can be easily cleaned and used time after time.
