Formal Ponds & Water Gardens
Formal Ponds and Water GardensMany of us have wondered around the gardens belonging to stately homes and no doubt looked with envy on the wide expanse of peaceful lakes or on the majestic fountains and water staircases. However, reproducing a formal water garden in your own garden can be something of a daunting task. What is the right formal feature for your space? Do you have enough space? Is it going to be a large expensive task?

Well Formal Ponds & Water Gardens by Philip Swindells, part of the Water Garden Handbook Series could well be the answer to all your prayers.

This excellently written handbook captures all the elegance and opulence of the water features from the great houses and distills it into wonderfully easy to read advice and step-by-step instructions.

The handbook deals with all aspects of creating a formal water garden. Starting with an interesting insight into the history of this type of water features around the world. Each page is illustrated beautiful full-colour photographs showing a wide range of ideas and designs.
Each chapter is beautifully presented, using simple straight-forward terminology that even the most inexperienced garden will find easy to understand. There is still much for the veteran water garden to learn. On every page there are clear full-colour photographs depicting a wide range of water ideas and designs, each one accompanied by an explanatory note giving useful hints and advice.

Even though the title indicates that this Handbook is about creating formal water gardens, some of the more innovative designs are anything but out-dated. These combine very easily with detailed information about some of the more traditional elements of formal water gardening, such as fountains and classically styled shapes.

Moving on from the descriptive pages into the practical instruction section, this aspect of the books is perhaps its strongest element. Very clear pictoral and written step-by-step instructions reveal how gardeners of all skill levels should go about planning the style, proportion and position of a formal water feature.
