Soil requirements:
- Rhubarb is tolerant of soil conditions, but since grows in the same spot for 5-15 years, the ground should be deeply dug and have much manure or compost incorporated before planting.
- Every year when the plant has died down, mulch with rotted manure.
- pH 5-6.
Planting:
- Rhubarb can be raised from seed, but it is easier to propogate by root division. Dig up a root of a plant that is over 2 years old and cut it into chunks ('sets'), making sure each one contains a bud.
- Plant sets with the bud just below the soil surface, about 3ft apart.
- Planting takes place anytime during autumn or winter but is usually done in February or March.
Forcing:
- Water only in dry weather.
- Cut off any flowering shoots.
