Ring the changes this year with a pretty door decoration that isn't the usual wreath shape. This big Christmas stocking will give visitors a warm welcome and is very easy to make.

Create the boot shape from small-guage chicken wire, filled with damp moss and cover it with small sprigs of evergreen euonymus. You could also use box, holly or viburnum.

Thread a short bamboo cane through the wire at the back to keep the whole thing rigid.

The top band is made from red spray carnations from the florist which last very well, so long as you keep the moss damp. Mist the whole thing with water regularly to keep it looking fresh. The ribbon is optional but it does give a festive flourish.

If you have clipped box or other topiary planted in containers outside your front door, turn them into Christmas trees by simply winding garlands of baubles around their bases.

For extra sparkle take a plastic golden ball - glass is too vulnerable outdoors - and thread a florist's stub wire through the loop.Secure the wire in the top of the tree.

With larger bushes, a thin bamboo cane pushed into the centre of the pot will also hold a bauble secure, but remove its cap and loop first.

You could also consider winding outdoor fairy lights through any greenery you have outside the house, such as climbing ivy or wisteria. Simply thread the fairy lights through the branches and enjoy a sparkling Christmas.

It's useful to have some quick and simple table setting decoration ideas up your sleeve for the party season - they give your table an added air of sophistication and are great conversation starters.

Try threadin small fruits, leaves or flowers on to metal kebab skewers. You'll find that roses last fairly well out of water.

Attach soft trails of ivy with fine wire to hold them in place. You could also try using fresh chillies, little kumquats, chrysanthemum heads and holly.

Please remember that metal skewers can be dangerous to small children.
