Autumn is one of the seasons that can pass you by all too quickly, especially if you're in an office all day.

Leaf Curtain The nights draw in rapidly and wind and rain often whisk away Autumn's beauty. But if you have little time and enjoy the turning trees then bring them up close with a curtain of leaves near your window. It's an ideal way to enjoy the amazingly rich spectrum of colours, sloe to hand, and a good excuse for collecting leaves in the park especially if you have kids. The leaves will brighten dull windows and keep you in touch with this most magical of seasons.

Make designs that fit your windows from leaves collected from trees near your home. Oiling the leaves with petroleum jelly prevents drying out and helps to keep their colours bright.

Autumn colour....
As the temperature drops in autumn, trees and shrubs stop producing chlorophyll - the green pigment that enables them to turn sunlight into energy. As the chlorophyll becomes diluted other pigments such as yellow and orange carotenoids and red anthocyanins are revealed and the trees take on their autumn tints.
You will need....

  • Leaves
  • Petroleum jelly or hand cream,
  • Fishing line or nylon thread,
  • Twigs and thing branches
Instructions:

Step one Collect leaves as soon as possible after they have fallen and dry off the surface with tissue paper. Then place between the pages of a telephone directory. Put this on the floor and stack three or four heavy books on top. Step two Every two days, move the leaves to a different, dry part of the directory and re-stack the books on top. They should be ready after about a week when they are dry but still slightly soft and rubbery. Remove and rub a thin coating of petroleum jelly over both sides of the leaves.
Step three Cut the nylon thread into lengths 30-60cm long and tie one end to each of the leaf stalks. Step four Tie the other end to a twif to make a mobile and fix in front of a sheltered window with tacks or drawing pins. To help keep the colour in the leaves, re-apply petroleum jelly every two or three weeks.
