Here is a fun idea for an unusual focal point in the garden. These silver ball planters look great hung against a wall or in groups from a tree, especially for a summer garden party.

This ideas was inspired by the owner of a garden who had used cannonballs as hanging planters. As cannonballs are not readily available and are far to heavy to be practical, foam soccer balls have been used.Using these foam soccer balls is not only a more practical solution, they are much easier to buy and do not cost as much as a cannonball!
The trick is to hollow out the ball sufficiently to put in a plant and some potting soil for the plant to grow properly. You will need to be careful that you do not make the sides fo the ball too thin in case it starts to collapse. Also make sure that you insert the S hook well into the depth of the ball or it will pull the planter up into a point when it is full.
We used silver acrylic paint to cover the balls, which seems to cover them well. However you can also get a fantastic range of colours in spray paints, although steer clear of enamel and latex paints as they do not work very well.
It is not a good idea to leave these planters outside in cold or bad weather. If you use Pearlwort (Sagina subulata), which has a low, compact growth, you will need simply to mist them regularly with a water spray.
