The variety of sounds from falling water is exploited beautifully in the Stapeley fountain. So many factors influence this: the depth of water, height of jet, width of nozzle and force of the pump. The sound will be different depending on whether the water falls back on to water or on to a solid object such as an ornament - this can give a whole range of splashes, slaps, tinkles, burbles, plops or whooshes, from the idyllic to the infuriating, from the gentle to the powerful, and can dominate a small space.

With wall fountains, exactly the same criteria apply. Choose one in a style that blends with its surroundings and place it to exploit light and sound creatively and sensitively. If there are walls built to retain a slope, there is an opportunity to create a water chute falling from a variety of outlets. Consider using light to make further use of the water spout. It is possible in low light levels to direct a slender thread of brightness through the spout from a submerged high intensity light in the pool below.

Look around, see the range of fountains on offer and start to think about what would look right in your garden. Whatever your choice, it will have more impact than any other feature, and will add an entire new dimension to the pleasure you derive from relaxing out of doors.
