When carefully positioned around the garden, Japanese lanterns and sculptures add architectural interest to a garden. They may be construted in stone, concrete or bronze. Lanterns, originally designed to hold lighted candles, look best when positioned alongside water, where pathways meet or near bridges. There are various designs to choose from to suit different areas. Other sculptures can also be used such as Buddhas, animals and carved stone seats. A pair of lion statues are often used to ward off unwanted visitors and to protect the gardener.
