The smallest wild strawberries are the Hautbois varieties, whose tiny red fruits taste wonderfully fragrant. Alpine strawberries are generally a little larger and less juicy, with a highly perfumed flavour. Yellow and white varieties look less appealing, but have a delicious flavour of vanilla.
- Cambridge Favourite. Medium sized berries with an attractive colour and flavour, this variety is indeed a favourite with strawberry-growers large and small.
- Elsanta. Largish, firm berries with attractive glossy flesh and an excellent sweet flavour.
- Elvira. These Dutch strawberries were developed in the 1970s. The oval berries are a deep glossy red.
- Gorella. A deep red conical berry with paler red flesh. This is an extremely consistent variety.
- Perpetual & Remontant Strawberries. As their name suggests, these late season strawberries go on to fruit throughout the autumn. Although they are not as sweet, so are better for cooking than other varieties. They can be picked while they are still green and made into jams, sauces and compotes.
