For those who like double flowers, Galanthus 'Lady Beatrix Stanley' is a must as its flowers are fully double and sometimes reach as much as an inch in diameter. Like all snowdrops, the flowers are, in fact, composed oftepals rather than petals. The inner tepals on Galanthus 'Lady Beatrix Stanley's flowers have a small green blotch on their tips and the flowers are carried on five inch long stalks. Its leaves are glaucous, up to six inches long, and have an upright habit of growth with tips that grow back on themselves. Like all snowdrops, Galanthus 'Lady Beatrix Stanley' likes to be grown in humus rich, moist but well drained soil that does not dry out in summer. Propagation: Lift and divide dumps after flowering. |
Galanthus 'Galatea' is a fine hybrid snowdrop introduced by James Allen. It resembles the more commonly grown Galanthus 'Magnet' but has larger flowers. The flowers are held on long, 'kinked' pedicels so they dangle prettily and sway in the slightest breeze. They are an inch to an inch and a half in length and have elongated pear shaped outer tepals and inner tepals whose tips are decorated with an inverted green V-shape. The flower stalks may be as long as eight inches. The narrow, grey green leaves are up to six inches long and have ridged or slightly folded margins. This vigorous snowdrop flowers early in the season and increases steadily once established, provided it has a partially shaded site in moist, humus rich soil that is also well drained and does not dry out in summer. Propagation: Lift and divide bulb dumps after flowering. |
Galanthus 'Brenda Troyle' and 'S. Arnotf share similar characteristics but Galanthus 'Brenda Troyle' is said to flower earlier in the season. It has enchanting large, single flowers with a sweet fragrance. The flowers are composed of rounded outer tepals and heart-shaped inner ones that are embellished by a prominent inverted V-shaped mark on their tips. The blooms may be as long as one and a half inches and are carried on stalks up to eight inches tall. It is a vigorous grower and so colonies can be built up in a relatively short time. Its leaves are narrow in a grey green and may be from three to six inches long. Snowdrops prefer light shade and moist, humus rich soil that does not dry out in summer. Propagation: Lift and divide bulb dumps after flowering. |
